01Dining & Social Life
Food, drink and going out
If you are moving from Mumbai or Bangalore, Pune will feel gentler. Kitchens close earlier and weekends are spent closer to home. In return you get a deep Maharashtrian food culture, old Parsi-Irani cafés, a wave of craft breweries in Balewadi, and a coffee-and-walk scene in KP (Koregaon Park) that surprises newcomers.
What it costs

- Misal Pav, Bedekar Misal (Narayan Peth), Shree Upahar (Tulshibaug), Katakirr (Kothrud). The Punekar breakfast
- Vada Pav, Garden Vada Pav and Joshi Wadewale. The everyday Maharashtrian street staple, quick, cheap, everywhere
- Bhakarwadi, Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale (since 1950). A famous maker, bring boxes to colleagues
- Sabudana Khichdi / Vada, Vaishali (FC Road), Roopali. Fasting food turned daily staple
- Pohe, every Pune café serves it well. The morning standard
- Puran Poli & Modak, the festive Maharashtrian sweets (jaggery-lentil flatbread; steamed dumplings), Pune favourites around Holi, Ganpati and Diwali, increasingly year-round
- Café Goodluck, Deccan, FC Road, est. 1935. Bun maska, omelette, Parsi heritage
- Vohuman Café, Camp. A classic Irani café with cheese-egg breakfast

- Mandai (Mahatma Phule Mandai): The historic central market for fresh produce, spices and household goods at honest prices
- FC Road: Student-favourite shopping and street food, affordable clothing, books and accessories

02Local Language Guide
Marathi words that help
Even if you speak Hindi well, Pune puts Marathi first in a way Mumbai doesn't. Marathi is the official language of Maharashtra, and Pune is its cultural capital. Punekars are proud of their Marathi heritage, so a few phrases win a lot of goodwill from your neighbours, building staff, auto-rickshaw drivers and shop owners.
