Sawai Gandharva Music Festival

Annual Hindustani classical music festival, four nights at New English School ground, Mukundnagar. ~50,000 attendees per night. The deepest classical music tradition of any Indian metro, Kirana, Gwalior, and Agra gharanas all have Pune lineages. Founded in 1953 in memory of vocalist Sawai Gandharva and run by the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal, it draws the country's finest vocalists and instrumentalists each December. Pawna Lake near Lonavala is Pune's favourite lakeside-camping and sunset-tent getaway, ringed by Shivaji-era forts. Nearby Lavasa is the planned hill township with promenade, water sports and cafés. Pair with the Mulshi Dam backwaters for a full Sahyadri lake circuit, best October to February and again in the monsoon. Pawna, Lavasa and Mulshi draw a lively weekend crowd, so book camps early and head out before Saturday-morning traffic builds.

Mumbai

West on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the new "Missing Link" tunnels-and-bridges section is now operational and cuts roughly 30 to 45 minutes off the ghat stretch, or a quick domestic flight. For Pune residents, Mumbai is closer than weekend escapes are for most other Indian metro residents. Use it for cultural fixes, nightlife, international airport access, and the occasional cricket weekend at Wankhede.

Konkan Beaches

Pune Metro is now operational, the biggest infrastructure upgrade in the city's history. Purple Line PCMC-Swargate and Aqua Line Vanaz-Ramwadi are running, with the PMRDA Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar line (Line 3) in its final stage and opening expected mid-2026. Surface options, autos, Ola/Uber/Rapido cabs and PMPML buses, cover the rest (note: app-based bike taxis are currently not permitted in Maharashtra, though Ola, Uber and Rapido cars are fully operational). Many premium residents employ a personal driver. IKAN handles all RTO coordination for vehicle transfers and registration.
